Students often find that they can comprehend and retain material better when they are engaged in the learning process. Just like learning how to ride a bicycle or play a musical instrument or sport, self-feedback is an important part of the process. This is also true with mathematics and science. Rather than lecture or force rote memorization, I prefer to use a question and answer style that helps guide the student through the concepts being studied. This also helps discover where there may be gaps in the student's knowledge, so that additional focus can be provided where necessary. I implemented and maintained custom code for a number of clients, and I performd lead programmer functions and mentor others. Every few months I conducted "lunch and learns" for programmers and analysts. During these sessions I would describe what code was doing in a particular module. This would help them with their implementations.
I like to first show a basic example of the problem, then show how the problem can be solved. I will then show another example that is a little more involved. After this, I let the person being mentored try solving a similar problem.
