Tutor - Writing, Reading, GED Prep

My teaching style is patient, relaxed, and supportive. I tend to tailor my methods to the needs and personality of the student.
I worked for two years at the Cleveland State University Writing Center where I tutored writing and reading comprehension to undergraduate and graduate students of many academic backgrounds. I tutored students one-on-one and also taught writing workshops to groups of 3-6 students. In February of 2013, I began tutoring GED prep at Seeds of Literacy, an adult education organization in Cleveland. I am comfortable tutoring most topics covered on the test. If there is a topic I am unsure about, I will let you know up front. I am also certified to be a foster parent and subsequently possess well-rounded knowledge concerning the learning needs of children and young adults of varying abilities and learning styles.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a bilingual, internationally traveled persona, I have tutored students of all ages. From 1999-2003, I have served as a third grade Teacher's Aide focusing on on reading, memorization and basic math tutoring. Since 1999, I also have tutored middle, high school, and college students in pre-algebra, algebra, geography, computer skills, writing, and grammar. My master's degree has trained me in learning techniques.
In my experience, a person needs to be confident in him/herself in order to succeed. Learning of scholastic material is two fold: personal and academic development. By understanding the manner in which the student comprehends new information, we then can build upon their foundation by removing the frustration and replacing it with confidence that will extend into their personal life as well.

A Little Bit About Me...

My passion for reading and the craft of writing drove me to pursue the study of English language and literature throughout my career at Yale and CWRU. As a graduate student at CWRU, I taught freshman English courses for a year. After graduation, I taught introductory English and composition for about a year at the community college level. Since then I have been an entertainer, and a teacher of the craft of sleight-of-hand to individual students, at seminars and workshops, and on DVD's sold worldwide. With my business operating almost exclusively at night, I am now looking to get back to teaching English during the daytime.
My style of teaching is one based on the importance of engaging the student in learning. I like to present them with examples of good craft, be it writing or sleight of hand, and then helping them come to the conclusion that a given piece of work needs impro ... read more

I enjoy working with students of all ages. My teaching style is nurturing and patient. Everyone learns at different speeds and no one approach works for all students. With children the involvement of a parent or grandparent is extremely important because they know the child and what he/she needs. Thus communication between the tutor and responsible adult is necessary for the child's success and clear expectations and goals are very important. Adult learners present a challenge in understanding what they want to accomplish with their tutoring. Sometimes the area needing refinement is related to career development and at other times a personal desire to improve. Learning never ends regardless of our age and I welcome an opportunity to share what I have learned in a very diverse career so it might be of assistance.

I love teaching and working with students. I feel that there is a way to educate and student, no mare how severe his/her problems, so long as I, the tutor, am willing to adjust my teaching style to his/her personality and/or learning problem. All struggling students can fulfill their educational goals so long as they are willing to put for the effort required and I as their tutor am there to guide them. Seeing this transition occur, from struggling to confident, in my previous experience has made teaching extremely fulfilling.

As an English tutor for the Kent State Writing Commons for four years, I was able to work with a wide variety of students. I enjoyed working with everyone from new entering freshmen to doctoral students. I also worked people in different educational backgrounds and people who were culturally diverse. English as a Second Language (ESL) students were also apart of my daily tutoring regimen. I also have a background which involves working with children ages 6-15. As a childcare provider I taught small classes of children basic reading and writing skills.
My teaching style is a “hands on” approach. I like to find out what the student already knows about the subject. I then like to fill in the missing links for the student in a fun, and interactive manner. I discuss any questions that the student has about the material after the initial information is given. I complete the process by go ... read more

To me, the most important thing is to be a good listener. I usually like to spend the first 5 to 10 minutes with a new student just chatting about their academic life and their study habits. That gives me a good sense of where they are, what areas they will likely be strong in and what areas where they will likely need further development. It also helps the student feel more comfortable.
After earning a BA in Creative Writing and a BA in English at Oberlin Colege, I taught for a year as a substitute within the Cleveland Municipal School District. After that, I worked for two years as a tutor with the Tutoring Club in Westlake. I primarily assisted high school students with SAT and ACT prep courses. My specialties were writing and English. I vary my teaching style. Some students are content with just reading while others need hands-on and visual experience. I believe in using technology, as the Smart Board and computer instruction in addition to textbook instruction. I do my best to keep the student's interest in mind, and I work at the student's pace. My philosophy is the student comes first.
I have been teaching for 25 years. I have tutored students in beginning Spanish and reading. I have also taught Sunday School and have been a substitute teacher for 11 years. I have just completed student teaching to become an Intervention Specialist. I intend to be certified this spring.
