College educated years of experience with "At Risk" students

I believe that every student I have ever worked with has been more than capable of understanding and excelling at whatever material we are working on. The problem I often see is either a lack of focus or loss of determination/ confidence due to not agreeing or benefiting from their teachers teaching style. With this in mind I gain an understanding of what the student understands and work with them to let them figure the problems out trying multiple approaches and explanations.

I have tutored in the Public Schools for many years while my children were young. As a young teen I even graded papers for teachers who were not associated with my school district. I enjoy teaching and get great satisfaction from the success when a student gets it! I home schooled my middle child when she became too ill to attend school on a regular basis. My method for her taught her to be very responsible. Upon graduation she had better self confidence and had a 4.0 in college and successfully completed her degree. I am a firm believer in the effectiveness of the Socratic method. Rather than tell the student how to solve a certain problem, I prefer to ask guiding questions to encourage them to think critically about the problem and reach the solution on their own. A Little Bit About Me...

Of the many occupations I have held, teaching at a small college was the most rewarding. Many of my former students have maintained contact through the years and more than a few have achieved high recognition in their respective fields of Physics, Engineering, and Education. I have found no one teaching style is appropriate for the student. While at the small teachers college, I developed a non rigorous intuitive approach to Mathematics instruction as the majority of students had a very limited math background.
