I often tutored children with mental health or learning disabilities in a variety of situations, upon recommendations from Psycholgists and professors. A Little Bit About Me...

I have a bachelors degree in mathematics which I just recently completed in May of 2015 from Binghamton University. I tutored at the university for 2 years in trigonometry and calculus 1. The list of math topics that my major covered are as follows: Calculus 1, 2 & 3, Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Number Theory, Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Topology, Probability and Statistics (as 2 separate courses) and financial mathematics.
I understand that math can sometimes be a very ambiguous subject for many people. For instance, a lot of times it just looks like things can magically happen without a very good underlying explanation, and to overcome that I try to really break things down and pull things apart, sometimes with real life examples, physical examples and even just showing the student exactly where the "magic" part is coming from. My tutoring experience has helped m ... read more

Your Child Needs Help? I Am the One Who Can Help Them!!!

I am a direct/explicit instructional teacher or instructor. Explicit instruction is broken up into stages that follow a sequence. The sequence of teaching/learning is as follows: first setting a purpose for learning, then telling students what to do, then showing them how to do it, and finally guiding them with hands-on application of the new item that was learned. Reading Comprehension & Fluency Strategies: Fluency- 1. Focus on phonemic and alphabetic awareness 2. Teaching the meaning of learning simple to complex words 3. Give strategies to increase the speed of students reading aloud Comprehension- I focus on the five close reading strategies that support Common Core learning. 1. Number the paragraphs that you will be reading 2. Chunk the text 3. Underline and circle with a purpose 4. Write in the margin what each paragraph is saying 5. Take a deeper look into w ... read more

My comments on tutoring Math : In high school I took the calculus BC AP exam.

I am very experienced in teaching small groups of college level students. During my senior year of college I was selected to be a Russian apprentice teacher through Kenyon College's Intensive Language Program. I taught students three times per week for approximately an hour each session. I had to go through training for this position, which taught me how to design lessons and utilize teaching tools to help students understand the material. As I am a recent graduate myself, I understand the needs of most students and what it takes to keep them engaged in learning. For example, I frequently used games as memorization tools for students that focused on repetition as a learning aid. In September, I am leaving to take part in the Peace Corps as a teacher of English language in Ukraine. I plan on pursuing teaching as my future career and want to keep building on my experience.

Math is one of my top subjects! Math is a highly creative and flexible subject. The most current research shows us that: Everyone can learn math to the highest levels. Mistakes are valuable. Questions are really important. Math is about connections and communicating. Math is about creativity and making sense. Depth is more important than speed. Math class is about learning not performing. Every child can learn math. The potential of the brain to grow is HUGE. Research tells us without a solid understanding of numbers, students will fail to comprehend higher level math. For teaching grade specific common core skills, I have been schooled in and use the whole brain methods employed in the research based and award winning JUMP Math program from Toronto, Canada. I am also schooled in Singapore Math. Both programs are fully aligned to the common core standards.

NYS certified 7-12 mathematics teacher. As a child there were times I struggled with math. I didn't always "see" the patterns or understood the flexibility and beauty of numbers. Yet with ith persistence, perseverance and encouraged mistakes ALL students can learn to see the flexibility and creativity inherent in math by helping them discover many different ways of seeing numbers, using multiple strategies with multiple entry points.
I use a whole brain approach to learning. This involves using gestures, chunking/practice of concepts that compose mathematical processes, and embracing vocabulary.

Tutoring for YOU with compassion and excellence

I have taught a variety of subjects, and I have worked individuals from elementary school through college. I am currently working with Rochester Educational Opportunity Center as a part time instructor. In addition to this, I teach as a volunteer math tutor to adults who are preparing to their GED and TABE exams.
I work with students on their level, and then assist students to build skills at the next level. I work to match my instructional style so that it corresponds to the student's learning style and comfort level. Moreover, it is important to relate new information to something that is familiar to the student; this is also how I help students to learn.
