A Little Bit About Me...

As a first-year college writing instructor, I became aware of the challenges young writers face, such as generating topics, organization, grammatical issues, and lack of writing confidence. I also realized it was essential for me to vary my pedagogical practices in order to meet the educational needs of all students, ranging from English language learners, to individuals who learn better visually, to those who need more hands-on practice. In addition, I also implemented one-on-one coaching sessions and workshops, learning methods that contribute to young writers’ success. Tutors significantly impact student writers with intensive one-on-one instruction. They serve as coaches working with student writers to increase their ability to write successfully in the varying contexts surrounding them. Thus, I believe it is important to provide students with a wide range of resources, including one ... read more

I am currently a medical student at the University of Minnesota Medical School Duluth. Before I started medical school I worked as a tutor for six years with two teenage boys with autism. Under the six years of my tutoring, both of these "disabled" kids were completely mainstreamed and even taking some AP and challenge classes. I believe that any kid can learn if they are taught in a way that is fun and structured. I tutored these kids in Math, Science, Social Studies and English. I also spent a semester as a Teaching Assistant in an upper level Philosophy course during my undergrad. Most of my TA tutoring was helping college students write papers.
I tend to teach things in a visual way. Drawing pictures, diagrams and using visual aides are the best ways I have witnessed to teach kids. I also think a structured reward system is HUGE in motivating kids to succeed. You need to find o ... read more

As an undergraduate student I worked at a general science and math tutor as well as a class specific calculus I tutor. I was teaching assistant for calculus I for two semesters and ran a study table for the athletic department for student with a GPA less than 2.5. As a graduate student I have taught both majors and non-majors biochemistry lab as well as general chemistry lab and discussion. I have had the opportunity to lecture, write quizzes, tests, and homework for college level courses as well as grade all course material.
Teaching is a very important part of learning; it is an ongoing process that is active and not static. My style of teaching is less conventional than most at a large university due to my liberal arts undergraduate education. I think that many students learn different ways and it is important to let the learner control the learning process. As an instruct ... read more
