My comments on tutoring Geography : Tutor experience

I have fourteen years of teaching experience and love working with children. I am able to establish quick a quick teacher student relationship. I am able also to quickly see strengths and weaknesses in students. I am curently substituting for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County school system. I prefer elementary students but will also tutor college students. I have found both helped all ages of students improve their grades in many subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

I tend to prefer a Socratic method of teaching where the student discovers the answer through discussion, reading and research. I will use direct instruction on occassion when the need arises but my classroom is typically humming with group work and whole class discussions.
I have been teaching social studies in Cabarrus County for the past 12 years. I am nationally board certified and have my AP certification in World History. This summer I will be receiving my IB training and will begin teaching AP world history in the IB classroom. My teaching style is to first teach the basic principles and then teach how they can be extended and used to solve problems. By helping students understand the fundamentals and problem solving techniques, they are able to think for themselves. This allows them to think more independently and solve a wider variety of problems without relying on memorization.

With the competitive demands of our youth and the need to excell, I know the presssure placed on kids today to compete on so many different levels is significant. Pressure causes much anxiety and undue stress, making it difficult for both the children and their parents. As a young man, I am still continuing my education to pursue additional degrees in English and then on to Law School. I will look for ways to motivate and make learning fun. I can encourage them that success is built upon setbacks and some failures, and how it can make your journey even more rewarding.I feel that young students can learn best from other students that they can relate to. I hope I can make a difference.
I am presently studying at the University of South Carolina pursuing a career in English, in addition to applying to Law School. I have concentrated my efforts in the areas of literature and composti ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Having been a babysitter and a nanny since 7th grade, I have been exposed to many different children and understand that not everyone learns the same way. The variety of ages, personality types, and ethnic backgrounds that the children have has given me an open mind in which I can assess a situation and determine how an individual can attain information the best way. I have helped with homework ranging from English to Algebra and strive to create the most impactful atmosphere I can. The most important aspects about teaching are patience and kind understanding. I am also the oldest of four and have grown up teaching my siblings since I was little. I fully support the critical thinking aspect about education and believe with support and knowledge passing information onto another is one of the best gifts you can give.

I strongly believe in differentiated learning. Each student, with the help of a qualified educator, should discover which learning style (or combination of styles) works best for them. They can then employ techniques to make learning and retention of information learned easier for them. I am a "hands on" teacher...research has proven that we remember what we have physically or manipulatively participated in. I have a great sense of humor, which serves to make learning a fun journey! And when I say journey, I do mean that the trip to the desired end location (tutoring goal) should be fun, exciting, and enjoyable! I do not pass judgment on any student; each student is different and worthy of reaching their full potential.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy tutoring a great deal because you can help the students gain confidence in themselves to do better with hard work and discpline. Everyone learns different and I try to find the best way to incorpate all styles of learning into my tutoring, so everyone is learning. I like to get the students involved in the learning by them showing they understand by examples and activities. I want them to know and understand the lesson I am teaching.
As a student who was assisted by tutoring, I would be glad to help other students achieve excellence in their studies and gain confidence in themselves. I have been a tutor since I was in a freshmen in high school. I have tutored students in English and reading skills. I tutored a group of sixth graders, who approved their state academic scores. It was a great joy for them to see they could do it.

I lived in Indonesia from third grade until I graduated from an international high school. While there I experienced a unique intersection of education and culture; my classmates represented more than ten countries. I learned to speak Indonesian and French, but more importantly I learned the value of education in an increasingly diverse world. My bachelors degree in Philosophy helped me hone my ability as a writer and critical thinker. I complemented my education with courses in sociology, psychology, and religious studies. In college I worked as a resident advisor, serving as mentor and counselor to a group of freshmen and sophomores.
Though science was never my best or favorite subject, I excelled in tenth grade chemistry because my teacher took time to personally explain what I didn't understand. I want to offer that kind of personal attention to students today. I am patient an ... read more

As a substitute teacher and an aspiring full-time teacher I've been on a journey to obtain my Master's in Education. I have earned my Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. While completing my undergraduate studies I was a tutor for the Omega C.H.A.M.P.S program, tutoring in mathematics. Upon graduation I assumed a position as an academic assistant in the Trio Upward Bound project. I have experience with students of all ages.
Teaching gives me a feeling of joy, and when I think back to my younger years and those days in the classroom I remember the teachers who made a difference in my life and I've always wanted to do the same. The reward I get from teaching is feeling like I've made the difference. I love to motivate and challenge students to learn, since I myslef am still a student the freshness of information and knowledge is at my fingertips.
