In my own experience, the key to learning has been to find a "critical link:" that is, to figure out an angle that makes sense to my brain. It is one thing to be exposed to a subject, and another to understand, remember and easily employ what is learned. During the summers of college I was trained in Project Read and organizational skills. I then tutored youth from grade school to high school in math and science from grade school math to algebra and geometry the same for science.
