I am a teacher who has learned through experience. I went from college to Kenya to teach in an international school for 2 years. I learned a lot about teaching and culture during that time. When I returned I subbed for 2.5 years in which I learned more than all my schooling. During that time I earned a master's and have gone on to move in the direction that jobs have come.I taught SPED for a year, taught at an Outdoor School for a year, taught Kindergarten at a private school and worked with Autistic children as a one on one tutor. I have dabbled in Pre-K and upper grades a little. I am continuing to learn by taking Field Study Biology classes and going to educational workshops and personal growth programs.

As a college graduate with both a bachelor's and master's degree, I have always been seeking excellence in learning. I have, over the years written many papers, reports, and essays, and consequently have learned and used many writing skills in many contexts. I have written academic papers, mental health reports, and sermons. For the past 20+ years in my work as a pastor and mental health rehab specialist I have worked directly with youth and children in a teaching role, healping them to learn about themselves and to express it verbally and in writing.

My teaching style would be that of Guided Discovery. This is a highly interactive style which leads the student to uncover the answer themselves as opposed to the teacher simply reciting the answer to them. Guided Discovery requires the student to learn by doing therefore developing necessary problem solving and deductive skills that will make them better learners and thinkers both now and in the future. I implement this style by asking leading questions, giving examples, making analagies and asking the student what they think or ask them to explain how they came upon a certain conclusion. This ensures that the desired cognitive skills and strategies are being learned.

Children are not students. They are not tools, nor are they pieces of a larger machine. They are people, impressionable and as important as the rest of the world. So, then, why would we expect everyone to learn the same? To teach a child in any discipline requires, in some cases, finesse, and an ability to adapt to their needs.
