A Little Bit About Me...

Over one year's experience tutoring writing at the college level. 8 months as a peer tutor at College of the Mainland, and 3 months self-employed. A variety of subjects covered using MLA and APA writing styles. Students that were helped ranged from collegiate high school to returning adult students. Creative and technical writing also covered.
Instead of time-consuming lesson plans, my sessions are based on the student's daily needs with a focus on any trouble areas encountered. The direction of the session is influenced by the student's opinions.

UT-SAN ANTONIO STUDENT WITH DIVERSE SKILL SET

I tend to be really flexible and try to adapt my teaching style to the learning style of the student. For students who tend to be more tactile, I might have them handle apples if a math problem references apples. If a student is working on a writing assignment, I will offer suggestions (such as marking spelling/grammar/punction mistakes) and help them learn how to correct the errors so they won't continue to make the same errors in the future.

A Little Bit About Me...

Applicable to this job, I remember my high school years and the processes I had during my English and Composition assignments. I completed an English Bachelor’s degree, with three different areas of focus, Professional Writing, Creative Writing, and Composition. I am finishing a Master’s degree in Rhetoric and Composition. I am on temporary, as-needed employment at Pearson Education Services as a scorer. Finally, I tutored, assisted, and participated in the lives of my fellow students. My experience has allowed me to have an understanding of theory, practice, and rhetoric and solve any personal compositional and academic concerns that have come up, and I look forward to doing so again at this job of tutoring.

Working hard and always driven is how I was able to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with a concentration in Bilingual 4th – 8th grade. Whether it is in front of a class of 40 or one-on-one, I have been endowed not only with the talent to teach, but also with the God-given ability to motivate. Most students hate my guts for the first week or two because I do not tolerate underachievement from anyone, including parents; but down the line the most frequent evaluation I receive is, “Mr. C, you are awesome.” There is no one who cannot be motivated to learn something well; and I always associate what must be learned with what a student's passion is or in what he/she is already interested. My students do not just learn the subject I teach. They learn how to learn and think "out of the box" and how to become a success.

More About This Tutor...

I began teaching as an Instructor and Dean's Fellow in Rhetoric and Composition and in English literature courses while a graduate student at the University of Iowa, consistently earning student praise in end-of-course evaluations. I bring the depth and breadth of full baccalaureate majors in Greek, Latin and British literature to my teaching and research, and am adept at assisting students who have not benefited from exposure to advanced essay composition. I feel I am specifically gifted in empowering my students to work hard at improving their essay skills. It is, after all, the essay that constitutes all college-level discourse, and for this reason it is imperative that college-bound students be well-honed writers of expository prose.
I have a reputation for making often difficult and recondite literature accessible and appealing, while candidly admitting its rigors. My perso ... read more

More About This Tutor...

In my experience as a tutor, I have acquired the highly important skill of adaptability. Certainly, particular techniques and strategies such as asking provocative questions are helpful with any student of any age. More importantly, though, I have learned that the best tutors are those who can shape each session to the tutee's individual needs and personality. This is most easily accomplished in developing a flexible approach constituted by a blend of directive and non-directive tactics. With this approach, my goal is always to aid the tutee in feeling comfortable and confident in developing new ways of thinking about his or her work, and, from there, helping him or her along the journey to success.
In 2008, as an upper-level English major, I accepted a position with Schreiner University wherein I hoped to use my education in the concentration of composition. For the rest of my co ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I was graduated from the St Louis 4-year Liberal Arts high school, St Joseph's Academy, after which I spent many years in Australia. All my tertiary and teacher's credentials are from Australia, which maintains the British-style of tertiary education. My credentials qualified me to be fully employed as a professional secondary school teacher and then as an adult ESL teacher for over 10 years. As a self-employed teacher, I taught in several language schools in Australia and recently conducted classes in Business English and Presentation Skills in Chile to corporate executives and managers. I am of the generation which studied English grammar and spelling, skills much appreciated by ambitious international and native-speaking students.
As a professional teacher, I see my role as a facilitating educator, supporting adult students in what they need and want to know and learn. It is the ... read more
