I like to use the Socratic method, mainly by asking questions and challenging assumptions. In addition, I like to engage those I teach, challenging them to think about what they previously have not considered. I believe in building on successes, and offering constructive criticism, where appropriate.

I received my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University where I also received training in education. Afterward, I became an instructor at Richmond Community College, teaching basic reading and math to adults with learning disabilities as well as a course on PC literacy & business training. In addition to classroom instruction, I've had one-on-one experience tutoring university students in English and Learning Skills.
I strongly believe that the success of education depends on how well it targets a student's learning style and values. Everyone can learn, but individual attention is a vital part of that. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill, I spent 8 months working at a wilderness therapy program. At this school I taught students life skills in a wilderness setting. After leaving this school, I spent the summer teaching art at a small summer camp. This past year I worked at a boarding school, located in Western North Carolina. At this school I worked with 15 and 16 year olds, tutoring and helping them with their school work and teaching week-end and extracurricular activities. I understand that any child can run into problems with schoolwork. I try to find out why the child is having a problem before trying to help them. Did he miss something and fall behind? Is she simply bored with the subject? The approach I take with the child depends on the answers to these questions. I feel it is important for the learner to understand that there is a reason for making the effort to learn each subject.
