I have enjoyed each experience I have had with teaching, beginning with an informal position as a study group leader in the Genetics course I completed at Penn State University. While working on my MS at the University of Tennessee, I taught lecture and outdoor laboratory sessions for the Ornithology course, which included about 30 students. As the coordinator of the Conservation Science Internship Program at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, I am responsible for much of the training of 5-11 interns at one time. The Sanctuary hosts interns from all over the world including 26 interns (age range: 17-42) from 24 countries in my time as coordinator. I also teach two 1-credit courses per year as an instructor with Cedar Crest College in Allentown, PA.

First, in order for the students to best understand the material, I break it down to their level. For subjects like math, it is simple to develop a step by step method for the students to write down and follow. Once the students have mastered the steps they are motivated to continue with the material because it seems straightforward. It is also important to have the students connect to the material; if they understand how the information is used in every day life then they will become more excited and motivated to learn.
