Ex-classroom school teacher with 10 years plus experience!

My teaching style is one that always tries to relate to the child and to have fun. Does the child enjoy video games, dinosaurs, soccer, dance, or a particular cartoon character? When I discover what it is the child enjoys, I bring that element into the subject we are learning about. If the child likes soccer and struggles in reading, I research about famous soccer players and find books on them. Perhaps, at the end of a teaching session, we go outside and kick the soccer ball for 5 minutes as a source of inspiration to get work completed. Bringing in other ways of learning through play and games is also something I enjoy. Playing simple math games or reading games is a easy way to teach a child, without them realizing they are learning.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Science : The key to breaking down non-fiction, reading-to-learn material is making good use of chapter titles, paragraph headings, bold words, etc. - the structure of the reading material. That structure helps students to break down the material into understandable chunks. Also, like all of education, connecting the material to real life makes the information relevant to a child.

I have joyfully taught students in grades 1 through 5 in Los Angeles urban schools, and in the suburbs of Plano. I have also been a Literacy Coach, assisting teachers in grades kindergarten through fifth to enhance their teaching skills in reading, writing, vocabulary, phonics, etc. - all areas of literacy. I have worked one-on-one and in small groups with "at-risk" students to pin-point their areas of weakness and fill in the gaps. A Little Bit About Me...

I tutored all subjects - especially in Math all through High School. I also tutored in college. I have strong skills in Math - all levels - but I especially enjoy algebra. I have two children and I basically taught my oldest son math, since he was a different kind of learner than the way they teach at school. He is a very kinesthetic type learner and needs to see, feel and touch to understand the concepts - so I used a lot of tools to help him.
