I try to keep the material fresh and I avoid boredom and repetition at all costs. One of my best tools to connect with a young person is through humor. If the student feels relaxed they are more likely to absorb the information. I also use reverse psychology to turn the tables so they actually find themselves teaching me the material. This has been a successful tool with children I have mentored as well as my own children.
I began teaching/tutoring while in graduate school. I tutored undergrads in sociology, psychology, and social statistics. I also taught driver's education to high school students while in grad school. When my only son was born I was a caregiver to my mother who had suffered numerous strokes and was wheelchair bound. When he started school I became a full time substitute teacher and then enrolled in Florida's Teacher Professional Educator's Certification program.I am certified in k-6th and Integrated Middle School.
