My experience began working as a summer camp counselor in different residential camps for those with special needs from 1974 - 1980 inclusive. Since then I have worked as a psychiatric technician with children and adolescents hospitalized in in-patient psychiatric units. I worked as a recreation therapist with children and adolescents for over 20 years in residential treatment centers, psychiatric hospitals, mental health day treatment, and alternative schools. I have my degree in Elementary Education. I have had experience teaching large class sizes, but I have also spent a lot of time in small group reading instruction, and I have worked in small group math. I tutored a kindergarten girl to improve her phonemic awareness. I tutored Language Arts in elementary school after school hours. I worked at a day care for 5 years and helped students with their homework after school.
I believe in meeting students at their level of need, and mastering the skills needed in order to move onto higher level skills. I believe in teaching students how to develop their critical thinking skills, and teaching them the concepts needed to succeed in school and life.

Learning starts before children enter school and should be integrated between home and school. I am a firm believer in laying strong foundations in the lower grades, and building upon this as the child develops.
