Upon enrolling my children in school, I decided to be an active part of their education. So, I assisted their teachers with everything I could. Eventually, I became a trusted part of the school system (an honorary teacher, so to speak). They began giving me more responsibilities, concerning the children of the school. I tutored hundreds of students to increase their FCAT results, single-handedly; I corrected documents, daily; I worked on setting up the computers for the teachers and students, and I trained both to use them. I even learned magic, so that I could help teach the students their studies, in a fun and exciting way. As a SUNY Oneonta graduate, I sought to continue my goal of becoming an elementary school teacer. I became employed in Schenectady city school district, working in a magnet school for almost two years. As a first grade teacher, I became very experienced and well versed in balanced literacy frameworks. This passed year, all 22 of my students showed impressive gains in their reading/phonics skills assessment based on Fountas and Pinnell, that I was required to give three times a year. Most of my students began the first grade unable to read at level A, which is the beginning of Kindergarten.
