I studied post secondary in high school and graduated in the top ten of my class. I was on the deans list every year of my college career. I was a teachers aid at the University of Minnesota for three years in the anatomy department. I was a the lead embalmer for the University and worked for the Anatomy bequest program. I was licensed in mortuary science in 2007 and have been working as a funeral director and Retail manager for the past three years.
I believe that the purpose of tutoring is to help students help themselves, or to assist or guide them to the point at which they become an independent learner. Teaching needs to adjust with each student or class, because everyone has their own flavor for learning. I tend to let the student take the lead at first, and then I try to guide them through the areas they're questioning. It's like a car on a road with a new driver: the student is driving all over the road, and I need to gently urge them into the right lane (or the correct answer). I also like to use real world examples when I can from my past experience, and encourage the student to do so as well.
When I first started college, I had no idea what to major in. I started taking creative writing and literature classes though, and found my niche in English. I enjoy writing, reading, proofreading, checking grammar and punctuation, and find myself reviewing billboards and magazines for errors. I believe the role of a teacher (tutor) is to motivate students to want to learn. From my own experience I believe students learn the best when they are motivated to learn by seeing the value and importance of the information presented to them.
