My experience suggests that students must participate to fully benefit from the teaching and learning experience. This implies that they must be interested in the subject. Therefore it is, in part, the teacher's role to engage the students and guide them in a manner that engenders their interest. Beyond this I have found that students respond best when their strengths are recognized and their efforts rewarded. To maximize effectiveness it is also necessary for the teacher to determine the learning style of each particular student and to provide lessons that allow students to learn in the manner most comfortable and effective for them.

A Little Bit About Me...

As I worked toward my master's degree in English, I discovered not only a love for English and composition, but a love for teaching. I have taught for three semesters; two as a college composition instructor, and one as a women's studies co-instructor. I also supervised a tutoring center geared specifically toward first year college students, and tutored students in writing.
I believe that each student learns in their own unique fashion. When I work one on one with a student, I first talk with them (and look at previous writing samples) to try and determine how best to tutor them. A Little Bit About Me...

Working with people, particularly children, has always been a passion of mine. Through the psychology program at Husson College I was able to gain a better understanding of human interaction, interpersonal relationships, as well as to obtain further insight on the foundation of the cognitive wiring in which we all possess. I also have a 6 year old daughter, who I have found to be the key to my drive in watching all children achieve academic success. I think the process starts with parents but branches out into the world of educators, and truly is a battle that can be won as long as there is always a core group of people committed to each child's success in the classroom.

Children learn in different way, and have different levels of enthusiasm for different subjects. I think that the way to encourage a child's success is to identify the ways in which the students learns best, and to understand what subjects/topics interest them. If you can relate to a child, your ability to motivate them and encourage them is amplified. I like to challenge students and to encourage them to think on their own. I believe positive reinforcement is important to children whose self-esteem might be low due to perceived lack of academic ability.

I have forty years of experience at the secondary and college levels, and in retirement I tutor elementary school students in reading and math and teach philosophy to retired adults. I have been a teacher, administrator, and counsellor in eight independent schools and a college.
