I have a Masters degree in anthropology (with minors in zoology and philosophy) and a Bachelors degree in zoology (with a chemistry minor) from Oregon State University. I have tutored high school students in math, science, reading, and writing for the Upward Bound program, was a teaching assistant in college biology laboratory and biological anthropology courses at OSU, and later a teacher of bioanthropology at Klamath Community College, OSU (online and on campus) and Western Oregon University. I was laid off in December 2009 due to budget cuts, but continue to present lectures and write scientific literature. I enjoy learning and try to pass along some of my enthusiasm to my students. I will work with the student to find the best methods for us to approach the material so he or she will have the greatest success. I believe that creating a structure assists in the learning process, but the structure may be different for different people. My basic teaching style utilizes a multimedia approach since different students learn in different ways (audio, visual, or hands-on). I like using simple “demo” experiments to show the “magic” of chemistry. Demos are then backed up by showing the chemical equations to explain what is actually going on. I also tend to use a lot of analogies, that students can related to. I access web information to help explain chemical concepts in creative ways. I also try to get students to think of problems as puzzles. I believe learning can be a fun experience as long as we never forget to ask the fundamental questions - "Why and How?"

I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. I always write out the problems along with the learner. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn all subjects as long as they have the motivation and determination to learn. Sometimes a positive and fun mentor is a great way to learn a difficult subject.
