Professional Biology Tutor/Teacher

My teaching philosophy has developed based, in part, on my experiences as an undergraduate Biology student. I routinely incorporate current scientific topics in my lectures. For example, I discuss the scientific and ethical dilemmas of stem cell research when I lecture about the development of different types of blood cells. I sometimes have students study figures and graphs and analyze what is happening in them. Essay questions are a great way to encourage students to enhance communication skills. My approach to tutoring is to first make the student feel comfortable and to realize that they are not "stupid" or inferior because they need help. Then I find out specifically where they are having difficulties and concentrate on that area. If they still are having difficulties in that area, I will move on to the next topic so that they don't get frustrated. Once they have obtained some level of confidence, I will revisit the area where they were having difficulties. My first experience came as a graduate student, where I was a TA for an undergraduate level intro media class, where I graded lecture tests, as well as taught a lab section. It was an enjoyable experience, but my interests didn't rest within teaching at the time. However, through my other endeavors in the arts & sciences, I saw how valuable it was for others to have a mentor.
