After which, getting to know the individual style of learning for each student will insure that time is used efficiently and that the student is understanding and retaining the material being taught. My style of teaching is one that strives to bring an overall understanding of the importance and relevance of the subject at hand. I believe children, as well as all people, learn much better and have much greater retention when they understand the bigger picture involved and understand why it is important to learn the subject at hand. I believe in relating the topics to something the pupil can understand and therefore grasp. I believe in teaching by example. I know especially in chemistry, examples help see the proper technique and variables needed to solve the problem. I feel that if a student is memorizing an equation but does not understand the process of finding and filling in variables, this will not help them get to the correct answer. A student need to dissect the equation in order to understand what exactly a problem is looking for. It took me many year to understand this process, but once I did I found that I could solve almost any problem that was presented to me in the field of chemistry. I hope to pass this knowledge on to my students.
