My teaching style is to provide several ways to solve a problem. Since learning is done in different ways, one of the solution methods will turn on a light bulb and the student will "get it". I bring additional materials and new ways to remember. Last fall I tutored a fifth grader in mathematics. I provided note cards for him in the various solution formulas. At Purdue University I took all Engineering degree mathematics courses. In addition, I took five statistical cources, three of them were graduate level. At AlliedSignal, I received a week's training to teach three day courses in Total Quality Leadership to employees. My teaching style depends on the student. It takes some time to identify what methods work best on the individual. In most cases, the student just needs a clearer explanation than his/her book or instructor is providing. Also, I like to create visual examples that make an abstract concept into something more practical. A thorough explanation coupled with examples and practice, practice, practice usually prove to help tremendously. It's also important to listen to your student and to constantly test his/her knowledge of concepts as we progress. I like to try to explain concepts in a way that I believe my student will find easy to understand. If I find that they do not understand I will try a different method of explaining the concept. I often like to use sketches so students can visualize what is being taught or story problems so they can see some practical applications of how the concept can be used to solve problems.
