I have learned that no two students learn quite the same and I try to find what motivates them and work in that area. At Eustis High School, many could read, but not comprehend so I worked one on one, sentence by sentence so student could learn to comprehend as well as read the words.

I believe that the curriculum should be tailored to the learning style of the child and not the other way around. Learning especially reading is a slow process where small steps towards the final goal count more than big leaps which are not lasting. Students can guide a teacher towards their ability and it is our job as teachers to pickup on that and use it to the child's advantage. Some need more encouragement that others, more supervision, while others do better with an overview explanation followed by "hand off" approach, allowing their creative minds to think of the solution. I like to use practical applications wherever possible. One time, I was working with an 11 year old on fractions. With her parent's permission, I asked her to my home to help me make chocolate chip cookies.
