I am a graduate from the University of Central florida in Civil Engineering. Obtaining my degree has enabled me to gain an understanding in many areas of math and science. In addition I am fluent in the Spanish language. I have over two years of work experience in an engineering environment. For the past year I have been tutoring students in Spanish, Algebra 1 and 2, Geometry, Physics, and several other math-related courses.
I like to teach students in a way that they can relate to. Talk to them about their futures and what they would like to be when they grow up or when they graduate. I like to propose real life situations where they might have to or need to use math. I like to get to know them and learn about their interests and help them see how a certain subject could help them. I believe its about getting on their same level, gaining their respect and having them being comfort ... read more

I have worked part time as an adjunct instructor since the '70s, including 22 years with the Orlando Program of Florida Southern College, and 11 years with Valencia Community College. The later provided me with dozens of short courses in education. I also completed and retired from a civilian career with the US Army and Navy, starting as an intern, and reaching Senior Executive levels. Very recently I have been tutoring fifth grade and seventh grade students attending Lake Highland in Orlando. Also worked with math students working at Seminole State and Valencia.
Students learn best from doing things. I try not to lecture, but to involve the student in the learning process. I can lecture, but I haven't found it to be as effective as other methods. I very much prefer tutoring to classroom teaching, mostly because I am helping people learn what they want to learn, and so ... read more

More About This Tutor...

One of the most difficult things about math is comprehending the concept. Many learn through repetition, or visual demonstration. I would think that my tutoring skills involve both. Repetition allows one to get an idea of what they are doing and it also helps develop questions. The questions help to get a full understanding of a concept. Sometimes to further complete understanding of a concept visual demonstration is needed. Based on my previous experiences in tutoring elementary school students, most of the time they really don't know the concept and are just going through the motions. If none of the two strategies mentioned above doesn't work I usually walk through everything slowly and find out where the problem is.
In addition to my undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering I am currently working towards my masters in the same field. I am specializing in Therm ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Over forty years of experience as an engineer and manager in the pharmaceutical and food manufacturing industries. Last position before retiring was as Engineering Manager for Kraft Foods Latin America. Academic experience includes two years as a full time instructor at the Univ. of Puerto Rico, and part time instructor at several institutions when my engineering career allowed me to. Also, for the last two years, I have been a part time instructor and math tutor at a community college in New York City.
I really enjoy teaching and the interaction with students. I pride myself in being able to come up with examples, analogies, real world experiences or whatever is necessary to make a student understand the principle or concept that is being teached. The satisfaction and sense of accomplishment that I feel when the student "gets it" is immensurable. I feel that anybody can be tought ... read more
