A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated May 2013 from Fredonia with a Bachelors degree in Childhood Education. My concentration is in English. I spent a year of professional development in the Hamburg school district where I had student teaching placements in first, second, and fifth grade. I have spent the last year learning the Common Core standards and aligning curriculum to them. I've worked as a substitute teacher for the last 3 years and have 2 children of my own. My son has ADHD and I work especially well with special needs children.

As a tutor, my job is to take students from where they are to where they need to be. I can do this successfully for several reasons. First, I am patient. Often student frustration stems from classes proceeding too fast, and teachers lacking time to help slower learners. The single most important thing about being a teacher or mentor is to be respectful, socially aware, and sensitive. Okay, that's three things, but they kind of go together. The second most important thing about being a mentor is to create understanding about the underlying principle of whatever it is he or she is learning about. Once you understand the underlying principle, the "how to" stuff becomes a *lot* easier to understand and remember. On the other hand, a person who's trying to learn the "how to" stuff without understanding the underlying principles is likely to forget key things, to be tripped up when an unexpected question arises, and to get into other trouble.
