I believe in learning to do things the "hard" way for math, making change, etc. Calculators are good for higher functions and after basics are learned. I try showing different ways of looking at something so the child will understand one way or another. I stress creativity and working things out for yourself as that is needed in life.

Students, especially those who don’t get enough attention from classroom teachers, usually lose interest with Math and this makes it even harder.
