More About This Tutor...

Classical violin training, I believe, is more effective than Suzuki. In language acquisition, I can work with a student to simulate immersion in a foreign language, or create building blocks towards thinking like a fluent/native speaker.
Linguist, historian, violinist, and polyglot. I speak English, Vietnamese,French, German, and Turkish. Out of these languages I feel I can teach English, German, and Turkish. I am currently learning Arabic and Portuguese. I have experience with language acquisition and would love to work with you on whatever your language learning block is, no matter the language you are learning. As a professional violinist, I have studied for over 10 years and perform regularly with different groups throughout the area. I am a student of the Concertmaster emeritus of the Memphis Symphony, who studied under the late Nathan Milstein. I will also gladly tutor in the ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have been in educator for over 10 years. I started teaching because of my volunteer work at the Memphis Literacy Council. I love teaching because I believe that education is the key to our country's future in this global competitive marketplace. We must prepare our children for the challenges of tomorrow because we live in such a dynamic world. I believe that every child can learn regardless of his or her situation. When given enough time on task and effective, instruction all kids learn. This is what I do.

I teach grades Pre-Kindergarten through 4th grade. I have been teaching since 2003. My passion are the early years but principals that I work for have told me that I am such a strong teacher that I should teach the upper primary grades. I prefer to lay an excellent foundation to get students grounded in the basic skills. Students that are taught by me excel and soar in the educational path.
I teach it one way and if mastery is not reached I try it over and over again until the student meets the mark.

I have 30+ years of teaching experience. I have worked with a wide variety of students from elementary age to adult learners. I am certified in special education, gifted education, elementary education, and have a master's degree in educational psychology. I have helped adult learners and at-risk youth earn their GEDs. I have worked with autistic, SLD, and ID students as well as students with rulings of ADHD.
My teaching style is a combination of visual, and kinesthetic. Most of the students I have worked with in the past who are learning disabled learn best by seeing and doing( hands-on ) It works best for these students if they are able to see the work being presented and then try it themselves. In reading, I tend to like to have the student read a small section of the paragraph and describe a few things that stuck out in their mind. ( Create a picture ) For younger students I ma ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I believe a hands on approach to teaching a subject is the best way for a child to succeed. I believe that flashcards as well as games help younger children succeed in mastering a subject. Making a subject fun is key to helping a child tackle a tough subject. For older kids, practice tests are very helpful as well as flashcards. Encouragement and support is also an important part of mastery.
I have been a volunteer tutor at a local elementary school during their aftercare program. I have also been a mentor through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Memphis to a first grader who had trouble with math (adding, subtracting, and multiplication). I have also helped fellow peers study for tests and the Reading and English sections of the ACT.

My comments on tutoring Creative Writing : I have a Bachelor's Degree in Writing so I have had extensive experience in creative writing.

I received my Bachelor's Degree in Writing in 2008 and am graduating this May (2012) with a Master's Degree in Journalism. I worked as a English, Writing, and Grammar Tutor for two years at both my college and graduate school. I have had experience tutoring and writing a variety of styles and genres including creative writing, non-fiction, editorials, poetry, blogs, press releases, and feature articles.
Instead of telling the student the correct answer, I prefer to help them understand why the answer is correct. With writing, there can be better ways to word a sentence or rearrange a paragraph and I try to help them figure this out on their own. That way, the next time they run into a similar issue, they remember how they improved their writing the previous time.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to learn, and love passing that on to others. I am a patient personality, and I may present a problem to a student to evaluate where they are. From there, we can go either backwards or to more advanced work. Education is very important for myself and for my children, and I like to instill that learning takes you further in life than where someone may have not even dreamed. I am amazed at seeing cashiers who can't make simple change, or someone who can't calculate a small percentage in their head, such as 10% of a number. I want children to learn and have a feel-good attitude with their accomplishments.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with older children. By the time students have reached secondary school, most are developing confidence in their abilities and discovering their unique talents. As a teacher, I enjoy encouraging students to reach their potential in any subject. I especially enjoy one-on-one tutoring, because the students are able to be more relaxed in this learning environment. They feel more comfortable asking questions, and this comfort in learning is essential for students to move forward.
As a Communication major at College of Charleston, the majority of my undergraduate assessment was research papers, essays, and writing exams. My grammar and writing skills have been far above average throughout my academic career. During the last three years since graduation, I have spent fifteen months teaching English as a Second Language at Chinese secondary schools. I also taught private le ... read more
