As a teacher's-assistant for children ages 4-6 I have been able to gain experience working with them one on one and in whole groups for almost two years. This has taught me the value of identifying with the child's unique learning needs in order to encourage and drive their academic success. I believe children need patience from their tutors, steady encouragement, and to be in a positive environment that allows them to feel comfortable, focused, and ready to learn without distraction. I have a AAST in environmental science and technology, a BA in marine science and environmental studies, and will have my BS in one quarter. As a Social Worker I came in contact with young adults who have dropped out of school because of becoming young parents, drug use, and or a lack of support from parents. My initial contact was to address child abuse and or neglect but I quickly recognized the bigger picture included their inability to process information because of a lack of education. I started a parenting class to give them a safe place to start looking at these issues.
