A Little Bit About Me...

I am currently a tutor and contract educator in the Richmond area. I have been an instructor at Rice University, and I have been a substitute teacher for the Toms River (NJ) school system. I have undergraduate degrees in history and journalism as well as graduate degrees in history. I have also worked in the public history field as a museum interpreter and educator. I have had years to hone both my oral and written communication skills, from my first fledging writing and public speaking efforts as a student to my more recent work as a teacher and scholar. I have worked with a diverse range of people in my career, including students, teachers, faculty, staff, historians, publishers, authors, volunteers, and the general public. The chance to tutor peers in high school was the initial spark towards considering education as a career. During my undergraduate studies the desire has grown as I was given the opportunity in the role of Teaching Assistant. I found from those experiences that I have an ability to gauge a student’s comprehension of the material during sessions. This allows me to make adjustments on-the-fly and in the process become more effective in accomplishing the objective. In my teaching, I look to engage students through whatever means at my disposal with a primary focus on participation. Learning must become pro-active. My experiences have spanned all ages and types of children's learning abilities. From a church setting, to a public school to a driver training car. As a substitute teacher, I worked on developing a good rapport with the students. And was always willing to assist them in working towards understanding the concepts before them. I am very patient and understanding with the children, because a stressful environment is not conducive to learning. I believe that a child should be able to learn while they are having fun and that positive reinforcement can go a long way towards helping develop good study skills.
