I offer 16 years of English writing instructional experience. I have taught a diverse range of students, both in terms of abilities and cultural backgrounds. Instructional areas include English as a second language, developmental concerns, creative writing and poetry (I am a published poet), professional and technical writing. I have also provided SAT and AP preparation tutoring. My instructional approach emphasizes interactivity, use of new technologies, and a positive, "we can do it" philosophy that acknowledges writing s a process that starts with the creation of ideas, moves to refinement and revision, and ends with emphasis on correctness. My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success. Graduating with a 3.4 GPA in Mass Communications, I have always been creative in both design and writing. My career in tutoring and teaching have been both diversified and rewarding. I have been able to help students develop educationally ranging from elementary school children to college seniors and young adults. Some of my assistance has been delivered through such programs as No Child Left Behind and reading and comprehension programs. Throughout my career, I have been able to reach students at where they were to help them get to where they needed to reach.
