A Little Bit About Me...

In a one-on-one situation, I prefer dialogue. Assuming the student does the assigned work before the session, I find that a informal, relaxed conversation on the subject matter at hand encourages the student to further explore the addressed topic. If I am familiar with the student's extra-curricular interests, I attempt to relate the subject matter to such interests. I find that questioning the student in a conversational manner produces the best results, as opposed to the more stringent (i.e. boring) task of fill-in-the-blank worksheets. For writing assignments, I ask the student to write a paragraph which we then go over line-by-line so the student has immediate feedback on any errors.

I had no intention of teaching when I started my career in Psychology and the Analytical Chemistry industry. I continuously tried to improve my methadology to arrive at the right mix of stimulation and information to make the learning process as interesting as possible. Teaching the Physics of Xrays and chemical analysis does challenge one to keep assessing the learned content and modify as results indicate. The results of effective teaching and learning start with asking questions about the purpose of the instructions, how will the results of the learning be measured, and what is educational level of the students? I try to teach them how to learn, rather than the concepts of facts and numbers, what do the numbers mean?

I began tutoring as a volunteer in High School. I have since graduated Magna Cum Laude in less then 4 years earning two bachelor degrees in Political Science and Philosophy. I have recently finished my first year of law school in the top 30% of the class. My experience in Political Science, Philosophy, and law have set me apart in grammar, punctuation, and both formal and creative writing. I have most recently privately tutored a high school student in English, Literature, and Writing.
I realize that each student learns differently and thus should be approached differently. My teaching style is to exert patience and positive reinforcement for each style of learning. I believe that tutoring is the missing link in a child's education, and that providing structure and follow up is the best method.
