More About This Tutor...

To be clear up front I am not a teacher. However, I have acquired valuable skills working as a highschool paraprofessional for almost eight years. I spent the majority of my days in math classes and science classes helping students and learning the subject right along with them. I also spent an hour or two every day in study hall to help students with homework (math, science, english, social studies) Aside from the practical knowledge I gained in each classroom I was able to find new and different ways over the years to help individual students with very individual needs.
Part of the advantage I have as a math tutor in particular is the fact that I failed math miserably in highschool myself. I have only learned what I know because I was bound and determined not to let any subject get the best of me. Unlike many math teachers who naturally understand math, I have the benefit of unde ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a positive approach to teaching. I am very patient when I go through the lessons and go back and review any older material if it is needed in order to grasp the current lesson of the day. I work hard to make the content stick and I always enjoy to see that light of realization in their eyes when they grasp the concept I am teaching them.
My background in Atmospheric Sciences gives me a good base in science and math. I feel my skills will allow me to tutor with both science and math classes, including Calculus I and II classes. I have spent over a year at Project for Pride for Learning in Minneapolis tutoring low income people on basic and moderate computer skills and job searching advice when I was an volunteer there from May 2008 to July 2009.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe a successful instructor is the most important part of teaching; one who is knowledgeable, wise, and be able to effectively communicate the knowledge to the students. I believe this can be achieved primarily by knowing the entirety of the subject taught and being able to connect with the students on an individual basis. The most effective instructors in my experience especially in higher education were effective at answering in dept questions on the spot and being able to connect with students with the course material rather than presenting facts or knowledge.
My primary experience lies with Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Program. This program was established to promote and nurture minorities interested in pursuing a career in the sciences and mathematics. I was involved in the program as a fellow. I believe in a teaching style that reflects a student's learning style. Whether they learn best by hearing, seeing, or doing it is important to cater to the student. My teaching style works around this philosphy and tends to be a combination of all 3 styles.
Although I have recently graduated with a degree in business, I am interested in pursuing a career involving people. My previous employment was a sales position that was very customer-oriented. More About This Tutor...

This past year I graduated magna cum laude from Carleton College with a Bachelor’s in History and Medieval Studies. I have studied abroad at Oxford University, and in Rome and Romania, and have a lot of experience in writing research reports and essays. As a student of the liberal arts I have studied a wide variety of subjects, from theology to environmental science, from Old English to statistics and am comfortable in almost any subject. During this past academic year I tutored a home schooled child one on one several hours a week in world history and research methodology; I was in effect his sole teacher in the subject and also helped him improve his writing and study skills. For the past four years I have taught chess to children aged six to ten, emphasizing analytical skills.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style varies from student to student. I can utlize manipulatives, videos and other visuals or provide real life examples that simplify more complex information. I am a very patient father of 5, love students and seek to bring out their best. I will get to know what their best method of receiving instruction is and teach to that method.
Since 1994, I have been working with 6th through 12th grade students in nearly every academic area. I have appreciated the many opportunities to prepare students for the ACT, develop mathematic computation skills, master the Microsoft office programs and speak with clarity.
