My comments on tutoring English ESOL : Having worked with Latinos most of my life I have interpreted, translated and schooled them most of my life.

I teach according to the necessity of the student or the students,Depending on whether it is one on one situation or a group of people.I realize that in the case of a group or class that not every student is going to learn at the same rate and that not every student has the confidence to speak up.
I was lucky enough to grow up speaking both English and Spanish at home and in schools and social gatherings of Latinos in Mexico. I lived in Mexico for 34 years before going to live in England. I have schooled Latinos in Mexico, England, Canada and the U.S. I owned a Latino employment agency in Indianapolis which I managed for 10 ten years. The vast majority of the workers did not read, write or understood very little English.

Learning must be fun, especially in a tutoring context. In my previous tutoring experiences, I always attempted to turn tasks into games or opportunities for creative expression. For example, multiplication tables can become an opportunity to play a relay game. Learning different parts of speech can be made enjoyable by creating an imaginative story. When you learn to play the piano, first you are taught the scales, which you practice over and over and over again. Then you learn pieces of music, with specific counts and phrasing. Finally, once you have all the rules in your back pocket, you can evolve into a jazz artist who seemingly leaves the rules behind. It is the same with language. You first learn and practice the basic components – reading, vocabulary, grammar, usage, three-paragraph themes, etc. Then you find yourself able to experiment with word choice and metaphor.
