Having taught high school in both affluent and underprivileged areas I strive to make sure that every student has a positive learning experience. My degree is a BS in Communication/Business with a minor in education. Language has always been my first love and I continue to take classes related to this field. The past few years I have worked in sales but I continue to tutor.
My philosophy has always been, "make it interesting and they will learn." However, what is interesting to you and I may not be interesting to the next person. I believe in listening and taking the time to figure out what works well and what doesn’t work for each student. I believe that people have many different learning styles and it is important to get to know the student in order to teach them well. I am very patient and comfortable with a diverse group of people. I also think that in order for people to learn, material must be presented so that the student can internalize the ideas and express the new ideas by reflecting on their life and their experiences. Through the experience of pursuing my degree at Boston University, I was exposed to many different styles of learning and teaching due to my interdisciplinary concentration in Latin American Studies. After spending two months in Peru on a study abroad program, I utilized my Spanish language minor by volunteering as an ESL teacher of adults at the Brazilian Workers Center in East Boston, MA. During my graduate career, I taught six semesters of biology to non-science majors.
