Phonics and help for dyslexic students

Hands-on, creative, active, using senses to keep children involved, especially those with ADHD. Trained in the Orton-Gillingham method to use explicit, sequential, systematic, and comprehensive phonics, especially for children or adults with dyslexia.
While homeschooling my boys, I invented new ways to teach them to read. These methods turned out to be helpful to many students. I've taught children how to read for about 5 years. I wrote a series of books to give teachers methods to teach phonics in creative ways, published through Creative Teaching Press. I've published mountains of curriculum. Formerly, I was the editor for the weekly education section for the "Denver Post." Now I am especially interested in helping children who have reading problems, particularly those who have or may have dyslexia.

I have a results oriented approach with a proactive style and look for ways to teach outside of the normal box, making it more fun. I am a make it happen sort of person, meaning that I give hands on attention to learning in core areas where there appears to be deficiency. I have found this to work best with my two boys and others I have taught. That said, I believe the best learning takes place when there is a feeling of trust and acceptance, so I seek to earn trust with employees or students by focusing on honesty, fairness, patience and communication along with learning.
I am a skilled professional with twelve years of hands on experience in Accounting, Operations and Process Improvement. My desire has always been to be a teacher. I enjoy working with children to reach their greatest potential. Everyone can learn but we may not all get there the same way or at the same time. Some children are not able to reach their potential in the classroom for many different reasons, they may need more individualized attention, they may be more visual, hands on, etc. Some children may just need more time.

I enjoy pretented not to know the work myself which allows them to help me. It helps me to see what they already know and to see how much I need to help them know. I use this approach to boost selfesteem in students.
I'm currently working for Huntsville City Schools Extended Day Program. I've been working there for 3 years. In those 3 years, I also worked in the work study program, working at the Richard Showers Center's after school program. While, at the Showers Center, I was placed with an ADHD and Dyslexic student. More About This Tutor...

Before I start tuoring a child, I like to get know them first. I think it's important to build trust with a child before jumping in and telling them what to do. A child will be more likely to accept help from someone they know rather than a total stanger. I like to make learning fun.
At Birmingham-Southern College, I was the News Editor for the college newspaper for two years. In addition, I have a minor in Journalism. I love to write and I feel that this is one of my strong points. I also tutor two young girls every Wednesday afternoon at Girls, Inc. of Central Alabama. I help them with everything from writing, to reading, to math and history. I am also working on my Masters Degree and will graduate with a Masters Degree in Counseling in 2011.
