Aerospace Engineer with tutoring experience

I have mentored/ tutored elementary students in first Lego league competition while as college student. Additionally I worked as a tutor and grader for the U of I. I grading homework of fellow students, giving me good insight in where people often struggle. I also tutored technical courses for undergraduate students. These courses included, physics 1-3, intro Chem, linear algebra, calculus, electrical and aerospace engineering course. After graduating I began working as a full time engineer, but remain available to tutor for individuals.
I teach through examples and Q&A. I strongly encourage students to interrupt with questions as the occur. I have found through my own education, I am unable to focus or concentrate when thinking of another question. Often small benign questions can lead to larger answers or breakthroughs for students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a results oriented approach with a proactive style and look for ways to teach outside of the normal box, making it more fun. I am a make it happen sort of person, meaning that I give hands on attention to learning in core areas where there appears to be deficiency. I have found this to work best with my two boys and others I have taught. That said, I believe the best learning takes place when there is a feeling of trust and acceptance, so I seek to earn trust with employees or students by focusing on honesty, fairness, patience and communication along with learning.

I have had two years experience as a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Alabama - Huntsville (U.A.H.), where I worked as both an instructor and a tutor. My tutoring experience ranged from assisting in computer-aided mathematics courses (Remedial and Pre-Calculus Algebras) to working in the tutoring lab (Business Maths, Pre-Calculus Trigonometry, Calculus sequence). As an instructor, I taught the Pre-Calculus Trigonometry recitation courses, which helped students in the lecture sessions with the reinforcement of problem-solving skills and conceptual knowledge. I have both a M.S. and a B.S. in Mathematics from U.A.H., graduating with honors with my undergraduate degree.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy helping students see that math, chemistry and engineering courses are doable, and that they have much potential. I am polite, patient, and extremely motivated. A Little Bit About Me...

As a college graduate, I learned the subject of mathematics. I was a math club member for 4 years. Also I have a BS in Mathematics and Economics. During the past 10 years I have been tutoring on my own at various locations.
I believe that everyone should have some knowledge of the subject. So I take what little they know and incorporate into the things they don’t. My goal is to find the easiest way to teach the student and show several different ways of doing it. I want to make a difference in each student’s lives while not making learning difficult.

More About This Tutor...

I think educators must take into account the different ways in which students learn. For instance, I've noticed that math students may have difficulty adding and subtracting fractions, but have no trouble whatsoever when I ask about dimes and quarters. If an instructor can build a bridge between new material and material the student has already mastered, the student's retention can significantly improve. By getting to know the interests and knowledge of each, I hope to discover bridges that will make learning an exciting and enjoyable process.

I personally believe that every student has the potential to succeed. Having a positive outlook and attitude along with a sense of humor in everyday situations allows me to provide students with room to be creative and independent and to make each tutoring session more enjoyable. I strive to raise the bar because I know that each student can achieve the level of expectation that is realistic for him or her, thus developing a confidence tool that creates a safe, positive learning environment. If students are given coursework that stretches them without paralyzing them, they will approach new assignments with more enthusiasm.

I am very passionate about teaching. I believe that every student, regardless of background, has the ability to learn and excel in mathematics. My teaching style is a cooperative type. I work with the students to help them discover mathematic principles. I have learned that a standard lecture type format does not fit every student, however, research indicates that cooperative learning environments greatly benefit and increase a student's learning. This is why I assimilate this methodology into my teaching style.
