I am currently in my 4th year of medical school and completed my undergraduate education at the University of California Berkeley where I received a bachelors in both Biology and Education. I tutored a fourth grader for one school year. I have also tutored at a tutoring center and worked with kindergarten children. Unfortunately I was only there for one month due to scheduling issues with my college classes. I do volunteer with the nursery and young children at my church from time to time and I have experience teaching kids from preschool all the way up to sixth grade (due to volunteering at church).
I'm fairly laid back. I try to get to know the student first and see how they do with their work on their own and of course helping them out when needed. Occasionally, I'll give my own tests to see how well their test taking skills are and how they do under pressure. Once I get an idea of which area is their weak point, I'll prioritize the subjects so that more time is focused on their weak area whether it be reading, math, writing, or even just test taking skills. During my course as a math tutor, I’ve found one on one tutoring to be most effective. Each child presented different needs and was receptive to different teaching methods, so I would meet with them individually. I believe each child is just as likely to succeed as the next one, and as a tutor, it is my job to encourage and instill confidence in them.
As I approach my college graduation, I have realized how fortunate I am to have been given the opportunity to attend college. I understood the importance of understanding math in life early on and my Finance degree only validated that notion.
