After graduating college, I worked at a local children's shelter as the Director of Outreach and Prevention. Through this position I was allowed to work with at-risk children in the Marion County School System (through an interagency agreement). In an attempt to reduce truancy, our agency focused on literacy and tutored children in reading (both in the school system and out in high-risk areas in the community). I loved this so much I went back to college to become certified in Exceptional Student Education, and began teaching at Belleview-Santos Elementary, then at Ocala Springs Elementary. My first experience as a tutor was in my college tutor lab. I tutored both college level Math and Chemistry. I found that students I tutored found it easier to understand complex concepts when their individual needs could be addressed one on one. If a student does not understand a concept the first way I explain it we try again a different way, but if they do understand we can move on and not waste their time.
