A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from the University of Iowa on May 15, 2010 with a BA in Elementary Education and a reading endorsement. Apart from my area of specialization, reading, I also took seven science courses at the University of Iowa, mainly in chemistry. My volunteer experiences have shaped the person who I am today, as I have completed over one hundred hours of volunteer work in schools and hospitals. Approximately thirty of those hours were spent one-on-one with first graders, helping them on math and reading skills and strategies. Furthermore, I completed my student teaching experience in a 5th grade classroom, in which I taught math, reading, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and science.

A Little Bit About Me...

I firmly believe that children are able to learn and grasp concepts more easily by relating the lessons and information to their everyday lives. If the material is presented in a manner where students can recall past experiences in their lives, it is much more likely to gain their attention and interest. My substitute teaching experience has taught me that praising effort and positive reinforcement are the ways to get the best results out of the students.
I have earned two bachelor degrees in History and Geology. I am presently taking online courses at Western Governors University to attain my teaching certificate. I'm a student at Augustana College whose academic record has ranged from public school to home schooling to community college and and even private education. I've worked as a tutor for over 2 years at Black Hawk College, at the same time obtaining an Associates Degree. Throughout those years I've encountered many special needs students and many bright students, tutoring in subjects ranging from English, Math, Social Studies, to Computer Science.
I believe the best way to learn is peer-to-peer learning. As an auto-didact I have the study skills necessary to regurgitate information as taught by the current institutional models. This is an uncreative and highly unnatural way to learn. There's a reason no major discovery was made in a classroom -- true innovation, discovery and learning is an organic process.
