A Little Bit About Me...

My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort. Often, what comes out of a student's mouth is surprisingly wonderful, and I quickly say, "That's great! Write that down!"

My most recent department chair, Dr. Marie Jureit called me the best teacher on campus. I've taught and tutored students for 37 years in music theory and composition, music of Africa and Latin America, and mathematics through college freshman algebra. As Director of the Freshman Program, I was responsible for designing and implementing programs in developing reading and writing proficiency, and overall ability to succeed in academics.
