I Make Less Mess and More Message Out of Math

I have been teaching since I started college. I taught in the tutoring center at SIUE as a freshman. Since then I have taught a wide variety of classes at Lewis and Clark Community College and St. Louis Community College. I also have had students that I have tutored for many years until they moved off to college. Even then I sometimes was called for tutoring when they were back home. I also have helped with middle and high school math contest teams
I listen intently to what students ask to decipher their level of understanding. I wish for the students to truely understand and not merely mimic. Math is thinking. Too often I see people who at first are struggling with math treating it as a mimicing subject. Some repetitive practice is needed, but understanding prior to the repetition is better.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a tenured teacher at a local public high school. I have a BA in Education, MA in Gifted Education, and an MA in Educational Administration. I currently jold a Career Teaching Certificate for Mathematics grades 5-12. I taught 6th grade mathematics for 4 years, and the past two I have been teaching Algebra I courses.

I have a very unique way of teaching. My key to success works on a system of discipline and rewards. I find creative ways to make the most mundane tasks fun to accomplish. I think the number on rule in teaching strategy should be finding a way to make the process enjoyable. As a student at the University of Chicago, I have tutored at the local Ray Elementary school through the Neighborhood Schools program. There, I tutored two fourth grade ESL students, an Italian boy and a Korean girl, primarily in math and reading. I have also tutored at the STRIVE tutoring center, helping a 7th grader and 8th grader with math and reading.
