A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated from Mount Union College in May 2006 with a BA in History and a double minor in Adoloescent to Young Adult Education and American Studies. Throughout high school I was a teacher's assistant helping with students in class during my study halls as well as working one on one with students for extra study skills. In the past few years I have tutored students in elemtary math, middle school reading and writing, and even my own students before and after school in social studies. I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from UNC-Wilmington. I taught first and second grades for ten years in the classroom. While teaching, I returned to school to receive my Master's Degree in Reading (k-12) and certification as a Reading Specialist. I believe students must be able to understand the content at the deepest level to truly learn it and to do this you must make learning interesting. I am all about hands on learning. For example, if your child needs help in science and the unit is on the water cycle, I have different experiments that would help reinforce what they learn in class. Also I think learning should be fun. If the child does not want to learn, they will not absorb as much content. I am a big fan of learning games. In the classroom students might only be getting the information one way, as a tutor it is my job to show the students information in many different forms. My teaching style is thinking a bit about sentences and what the students expects of them can help us to diagnose problems with style. The basics of style are very simple and can be distilled into one principle: a sentence, at its most basic level, is about actors and actions. As such, the subject of a sentence should point clearly to the actor, and the verb of the sentence should describe its important action.
I have some experiences with deaf and hearing impaired. I have Associate of Science with Early Childhood, Associate of Science with Special Need Education and Bachelor of Science Education minor Social Work.
