My main goal is to provide students with tools that will advance them personally and professionally. To achieve this, students need to understand how they learn effectively. As a tutor I will help students determine their learning style(s) and focus my efforts through this style(s). A second component of successful learning is subject relevance. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach. It can not only be a welcome and refreshing change/respite from the ‘usual textbook and ditto’ drill, but also helps by illustrating complex processes and concepts in a basic comprehensible manner first; I then add the more difficult material to the ‘firmer’ foundation.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that every person has a specific set of gifts, talents and abilities that is unique to each of us. Education, through its varied forms, is vital in the process of equipping children with the ability to grow and walk in their fullness so that they are confident in contributing their part to the world. With this belief, teaching must start with the person and then move to the content. I very much enjoy the process of teaching and learning with others. And, although I am now highly educated, I struggled, at times, in school. I went from being "in the lowest reading group" in third grade to graduating with honors in college.
