I try to find a common, basic level of understanding with the student and then show how a few key insights can help the student broaden her/his knowledge. In math, for example, this typically means showing how elementary concepts can be applied to simplify more complex problems, such as showing how such things as the distributive and associative properties are being used in solving equations, sometimes in a context where these things are often glossed over.
I have taught computer science courses in business college, and I taught algebra, calculus, and statistics as a graduate student. I earned three degrees in five years, all in quantitative disciplines. The range of material covered by those degrees includes mathematics and statistics, economics, and some computer programming. A Little Bit About Me...

Younger people need sometimes more than one exposure to math and the sciences. I know I did. Part of the problem is the pre anxiety associated with taking these more rigorous courses. My philosophy is to break down the subjects into digestible parts. Also I feel the student must be shown practical applications with various different resources, revealing the common threads of the processes. There is no reason math and science should be thought of as beyond the reach of any student.
Since leaving my position in biotech, I have been occasionally tutoring high school and undergraduate college students. Most of my experience is in math and physics.
