I did masters in Math from Lucknow University India in 1983 and then again another Masters from Canada ( University of Western Ontario ) in Statistics 1n 1989. Practice, practice, practice. Math is not learned by watching, it is learned by doing. Some types of problems can be learned after only a few examples, others take much more time and patience. My role as a tutor is help guide students through a problem while doing as little of the actual calculations as possible. I try to make my students see that many problems, while different in appearance, are actually the same as ones they've already solved before. I always strive to get that "ah ha!" moment from my students, where they understand not only how to do a problem, but why we used that method to solve it in the first place.

Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.
I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.

From there on, giving a lead for the student to follow has worked best for me. Like filling in a blank to complete a statement, this approach provides a context for the pupil to work in, a guide.
