I believe that learning should be fun and effective. It is important to me that students enjoy the discovery and challenge of learning but that they also learn the discipline and perseverance that will help them continue to grow. I enjoy using many styles of learning and kid-friendly activities to help students understand and master material. I strive to make my students feel encouraged and challenged to do their personal best. I want them to help them have realistic expectations and give them the knowledge, tools and help they need to reach them. I want to give students confidence that will help them succeed.

As a graduate in meteorology with a minor in math, I have had plenty of experience with math and science. I have had the pleasure of sharing this knowledge by tutoring children in these fields. My first experience occurred when I was a senior in college: I tutored students in math individually and in groups. It was enjoyable to assist students in Algebra up to Calculus. I gained more tutoring experience when I assisted high school and college students while I worked for Carney Educational Services recently. I have also been a teacher. First, I gained some valuable experience as a substitute teacher. Then, I had a blast while I was an instructor at Astrocamp. Getting kids excited about science was awesome.
Making school awesome for students is challenging, but it is something that gives me a lot of satisfaction. Before I begin teaching, I create several goals and strategies to make ... read more

I like math because it's all about building off of fundamentals. Once a person has a good hold of the fundamentals, they can begin to apply them to more complicated problems. I find the best way to build up the fundamentals is to relate it to the student in some way. Once the material is related, the student is better able to focus and concentrate, which allows for a quicker and more firm grasp of the subject matter.
As a graduate from the Oregon Institute of Technology I have had an in depth education in math, physics, and electronics with a healthy supply of technical writing. While in school I was able to help other fellow students in their math classes, much as I did when I was in high school. This experience, coupled with growing up in a house with two teachers for parents, has helped me obtain a useful teaching style.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy teaching. Working with a student one-to-one or even in small groups allows a student to have their individual needs met. Tutoring has the advantage of catching the student where they are struggling to comprehend. I am patient, creative, and prefer to model examples for my students. I believe that a strong foundation in the basics will help a student grasp more difficult concepts. My favorite venue is the use of a dry erase board and having the student model back an example to evaluate if they understood the concepts or the steps to the solution.
I have been an educator for over 10 years. Even as an undergrad, I was interested in working with children and spent my summers employed with the YMCA's youth programs. My experience is working with at-risk youth from kindergarten to high school seniors. My Master's degree in education combines coursework in special education a ... read more

I enjoy seeing the light go on when someone finally understands a language concept. Learning a language is difficult work and takes time, but it is also very rewarding. Having been through the learning process myself, I appreciate the dedication students put forth to accomplish their goals. Students should be sound in both their breadth of vocabulary as well as their understanding of grammar. I build upon both foundations simultaneously and work to ensure that students learn correctly from the beginning and can advance with confidence.
As an undergraduate student, I developed my love for learning. While I have pursued other interests since graduation, my studies allowed me to hone my abilities to communicate both in written form as well as through speaking and personal interaction. In 2006, I left for Buenos Aires, Argentina to study Spanish and returned to the U.S. 18 months later ... read more

As a counselor for two summers at Camp Harlow (eugene, OR), I had my hands full playing, mentoring, and getting know up to twelve kids every week from the ages of 5-14. During this time, effective communication skills were paramount to success along with patience and listening. I work hard to communicate clearly and simply on an appropriate level. This has afforded me many opportunities to successfully mentor others. I believe learning is best done through teaching and dynamic communication. Overall, I would like to reinforce that my teaching style emphasizes efficient communication through the proper definition of concepts and the clear and appropriate use of language.

My teaching career began in Australia in 1974. I taught in a private school for four years. After returning to Oregon, I attendd the univeersity earning my bachelors and teacher's certification. My teaching assignments included middle school social studies- world history, American history, geography, and language arts. My high school assignments include world history, American history, and geography. I am skilled in teaching study skills.
My teaching style adapts itself to student needs. I like to balance the affective and the cognitive domains. I organize the lesson teaching general overview and vocabulary first then move to specifics and personal applications that can be framed creatively. I teach with a commitment to the subject and the belief that the student deserves my best effort.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I have helped with pre-K and grade school children with an emphasis on working with Autistic children. All children can succeed in school given the right tools; just because they do not get the idea from one method does not mean that they won't get it from a different method. I think that all children can learn regardless of age, learning ability or other status, if given a chance.
I spent two years teaching and tutoring Autistic children. I aided in routine skills, verbal skills and dealing with change. I have worked with two different children on these skills. I also have extensive skills in writing and researching for my research papers. I also have great knowledge of APA format and can write an essay in no time flat.

My philosophy towards education involves connecting with my students individually to motivate them and maximize their potential. Because children’s needs are so diverse, I am careful to set individualized, attainable goals for them. Otherwise, a frustrated child will quickly lose his excitement for learning. I believe in creating hands-on activities that trigger creative thinking, and I’ve found this technique promotes learning well beyond the immediate lesson. Also, I maintain a flexible environment, allowing my students to feel more control over their daily interests and lessons.

I earned a B.S. in Secondary Education focusing on literacy and written expression, as well as Special Education methodology. This foundation allows me to successfully relate content to students with diverse learning needs, and assess student progress. I have assumed an instructional role in many settings. These include: a student teacher in a 7th grade classroom, a reading tutor at a summer enrichment program for marginalized youth, a camp counselor at an outdoor nature camp, a tutor in a school resource room, and a guest speaker for students visiting my college from Boston. With my past experience with students, and knowledge of language arts and instructional methods, I can surely meet the needs of virtually any student.

As a Graduate Teaching Fellow (GTF) in the Philosophy Department at the University of Oregon, I assist faculty by running two weekly 50-min discussion sections of approximately 30 students, and I am responsible for evaluating these sixty students' work for the class, particularly written work, and exams. As a Writing Associate at Swarthmore College (2002-2005), I was hired and trained by Swarthmore College to tutor Swarthmore students in academic writing. I conference with the students of an assigned course to aid them in revising essays for that course. I advised students on a drop-in basis at Writing Center.
