A Little Bit About Me...

I truly enjoy working with students of all ages. It doesn't matter what they don't know because I believe anyone can be taught anything, at least as long as you have the right teacher and materials at your disposal. I believe students are like little sponges. They're taking in everything around them. Obviously, if you fill their heads with garbage, they will learn garbage. However, if you fill their heads with quality information, you explain it in a way that they understand, and you make it fun for them to learn, then they will learn everything you're trying to teach. There are thousands of educators, but only a few real teachers who can get a message across in such a way that the student doesn't just do the work, they UNDERSTAND what they're doing and why. As far as I'm concerned, if a student doesn't learn something, it's not because he didn't try. It's because I failed to teach him i ... read more

I love Reading myself and enjoy passing on that love to students. I enjoy working one on one or in small groups with students, which allows you to really see the growth and progress. I believe all children have an innate ability to learn; but some simply need more than the traditional classroom setting provides. I believe in using the student's learning style, and building upon that to strengthen their areas of need.

I have tutored numerous students both privately and through a local tutoring organization and the Learning Resource Center of Polk County. My approach to tutoring is one of patience, practice and fun. I believe in staying on topic but also be available to detour to relevant topics that may broaden the application of the subject being studied. Through the use of computers, research and practical examples, my students are given different approaches to enhance their study skills. For me, learning any new subject begins with learning its language. For example, in math and science, vocabulary and usage are keys to understanding processes basic to any application. Finally, I welcome the opportunity to explore you or your child's talents, helping to identify and adapt a personal style of learning to ensure educational success. )

Over the last three years I have worked in Hillsborough County as a Middle School Science Teacher. After three years of teaching Science I had a strong desire to work with ESE and Special Needs children so I became a Sub for Hillsborough County so I could travel where need and work with various children. Prior to teaching in FL, I taught in SC and provided reading pull out in WV. During my time in WV I worked on a dual Masters in Literacy and Elementary Education, but was unable to finish it due to lack of aid. While teaching FL, I have also tutored children privately and with a SES service.

I believe all children can learn, particularly if we match our instructional style to the learning style and needs of the student(s). As the mother of a special needs child, I constantly look to see what other teachers have perhaps missed in their dealings with a classroom full of students. My references, from supervisors and parents alike, evidence the passion I display toward struggling students. I enjoy collaborating between the home and the school to provide the child with the best education we collective can provide.
I taught elementary special education for two years with the Lima, Ohio, public schools. I taught high school Spanish and Remedial Reading for two years with the Pike Delta York schools in NW Ohio.
