I am a Ph.D. ABD in Sociology. (I expect to defend my dissertation this fall and graduate with Ph.D. in December. I enjoy a very hands-on approach to teaching where students remain attentive through an energetic and lively approach. As a Senior in High School I spent a semester in Mettmann, Germany. During my stay I helped my host mom, who was also the head English teacher at the school I attended. I assisted her teach 6th and 7th graders and had the opportunity to head the classes on multiple occasions. She also volunteered to teach English to elderly citizens once a week, which I also filled in for her when she had schedule conflicts. It was a terrific experience which demanded constant adaptation and patience. After finishing up 4 years of German from Ames High School, I began my studies at ISU. I took 2 or 3 German classes every semester. Classes varied from early 1900's literature to German films.

I have over 15 semesters of college courses most in the sciences. I find math and science to come easy to me if I am taught it in the right way and I would love to share that with struggling students out there. I have had experience in big and small schools, accelerated programs as well as normal classrooms so I have been exposed to a variety of learning environments. I love to teach and coach and think it is important to understand that everyone learns and grasps concepts in different ways. I do not have a specific teaching style other than positive because each child requires their own approach.

At the elementary level I have 2 years experience as a K,1st and 2nd grade combined teacher, three years as a 1st grade teacher and 1 year as combined 1st and 2nd grade teacher. In the area of special education I have taught students from age 3 to 16 with Mental Disabilities for 8 years. Currently I am working as a substitute teacher for the Carlisle Community Schools and Des Moines Public Schools. My teaching style is that I believe all students can learn but that there are different learning styles and we must match the correct learning style with the student. I believe in setting goals and working to ensure they are accomplished. In my opinion, learning should never feel like a boring chore. The student should be working hard, but enjoying him or herself in the process, and this is when the most efficient and effective learning occurs. I work to impart certain values in the students I serve, including: fortitude, imagination and pride. While I earned my bachelor's degree in communication from Loyola, I also worked as an Academic coach for high school students. I spent a year tutoring students for an academic competition that tested all skill areas including, writing, math, history and science. I have earned a bachelor degree in mathematics. While doing so, I have taken many educational classes that has taught the different ways kids learn. As an Iowa State graduate, I was very driven to not only achieve a great education but to actually learn the material set forth by my professors. At Iowa State I started with as a sociology major but throughout my career I was able to find additional interests and ended my tenure at Iowa State with a degree in Sociology and Political Science, with minors in Criminal Justice and Philosophy. Throughout these studies I have learned that basic logic can get around many of the learning impediments that individuals have.
