As a masters degree holding physicist I have an extensive background in both physics and mathematics. Additionally, as a published author and the author of many research papers and lab reports I have considerable grammatical skills, and writing experience. My whole educational career tutoring my classmates and siblings has come as second nature to me, but I have had official teaching assistant and course assistant roles in helping edit student essays, and in introductory physics courses. Additionally, I have tutored students in astronomy, chemistry, history of science, and mathematics at levels ranging from basic arithmetic to calculus. I also have considerable experience with standardized testing, drawing and painting.

Experienced math tutor.

I have been tutoring at Forsyth Technical Community College since September 2008. I work on average, over the 5 years, 15 hours a week, but now working 21 hours a week since I am now out of school. I have done private tutoring for about 3 years now, either with people from met from school or from tutoring. I got a BS in both Mathematics and Computer Science in May of 2013. Math and computers have always been my strength, and when getting my degree, I would always help my friends in their classes.
It depends on the student and what they are doing. If all they need is practice, then I will let the student do all of the work, interjecting only to give advice or to correct a mistake if the student does not catch it themselves. If needed, I will work out similar problems. If the student needs help understanding, I first go in depth why it works and why you do what you do. I then ... read more

No drudgery!

Student-led and interactive. No lectures. No drudgery. I focus on the process of solving problems. Restate the question. Draw diagrams. Figure out what information is missing. How can I get that information? Can it be calculated or is an estimate good enough? What sources are reliable?
I solve problems. I am a bioanalytical chemist and biomedical engineer. This profession requires using math, statistics, biology and chemistry at a high level on a daily basis as I develop products that improve healthcare. I have taught or tutored science and math from elementary to post-college level for over 25 years in diverse settings.

More About This Tutor...

I am a senior in the Education program at Appalachian State University. As an Elementary Education major, I have worked closely with children from many age levels. I have participated in an after-school tutor/mentor program at Appalachian State in 2008. In 2009, I completed two internships while in the Education Program. One working with 2nd grade students and the other with 5th grade students. I have also taken many courses to understand context and teaching strategies in all subject areas.
I believe that children must be engaged in the subject matter before successful learning takes place. Finding fun, interesting, and personal ways for the child to connect to the topic will truly allow them a chance to learn and retain information. I love finding different ways for individual learners to understand what they are being taught.

My love of mathematics provides me with a passion to help everyone understand and get competent in the field. Having taught and tutored at the various levels, I realize that everyone learns differently. I am a true believer in the concept of Universal Design for Learning, which is a theory that you structure your lessons so that the concepts are available for all learners. I always present concepts mathematically, visually, verbally, along with exercises and activities. I try to relate the topics to everyday life so that the student understands why it might be important and relevant to their lives.
I graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude with honors in Mathematics from Brandeis University. I proceeded to graduate school, where I studied math and taught calculus for two years. Not wanting to spend my career doing research, I went into the business world, first getting an MBA f ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a direct and simple teaching method. I love teaching physics and it always came naturally to me but I understand that most people do not feel the same way. I try to help students gain a deep understanding of the subject matter so that the principles and concepts are learnt and not simple formula memorizing. I do this so that when the student comes across a problem that does not fit the general shape of previous problems they can use the concepts learned to solve the problem. In short I try to teach problem solving and not rote learning in my subjects.
I have been tutoring, mentoring and teaching students over the last 5 years in Physiology, Physical Fitness, and Physics. I have taught online, one on one and in a classroom setting. I have taught practical application to theory as well as theory of the relevant subjects. I have been involved in research projects as well as publ ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have left the corporate after 18 years to pursue teaching. I have two bachelors degrees in physics & mech. engineering. I want to put these to use and make an impact on kids in my community. I have been pursuing a lateral teaching entry position, while substituting. I am mentoring with a local teacher and have finished a course in effective teaching. I am tutoring at my church and reading education material, along with boning up on science material.
I am by nature an encourager. I am optimistic every child can learn -- the trick is to spark an interest in the subject and communicate the material to them in an understandable way. Learning at its best should be fun and educational, though not necessarily entertaining. Having said that, there are no shortcuts for hardwork and homework and repetitions on problem solving.

More About This Tutor...

I am an optimist in the classroom. All kids can learn but only if they want to and the proper language is used to communicate. I use an encouraging, cooperative method to gradually uncovering the essence of the plan. I will not move on until they 'get it'. This may mean using various analogies throughout the lesson in order to take the knowledge and pass it on to the students. I feel hands on is very valuable in accelerating the ' getting it' part.
I have degrees in Physics and Mechanical Engineering from Georgia Tech. I have spent 18 years in mentoring, supervising, and leading others in technical manufacturing. Most recently, I am teaching middle and high school science -- 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th. This includes physical science, biology, chemistry & physics.

A Little Bit About Me...

Though I am a student of Biotechnology, helping others in the field of mathematics has been of interest in that its a common “language” worldwide. Prior to completing my General Arts degree, I had aided two individuals in math, an adult and a high school student in college algebra; and recently aided a coworker this past year in the same subject. In addition, I had later acquired 70+ credit hours towards an Electrical Engineering Degree, which further honed my math skills into the range of college level calculus, trigonometry, differentials, and basic statistics. Furthermore, I have experience in working with the public for 10+ years in customer support/service environments.
