A Little Bit About Me...

I began teaching private guitar, bass, and music theory lessons when I was 16 years old. I have continued to do so until present day. My emphasis for my Masters was Theory/Composition/Arranging. My primary instruments are guitar and bass, although I went to college on a French Horn scholarship. I have played professionally with a wide arrange of ensembles, from a three piece acoustic trio to a ten piece big band. classical music to folk to dixieland to swing to gospel to rock to jazz, I have pretty much played it all at some point.
In my experience as a teacher, i have taught children as young as 4 to retired adults who wanted to play for a hobby. My passion to teach music is driven by the realization that musical ability, the enjoyment, and sense of accomplishment can last a lifetime. Music in itself becomes its own reward. My teaching style is flexible, depending upon the subject, number and age of students, and the framework of the learning environment. In a tutoring setting, the student's needs are evaluated and methods for meeting these needs are explored and applied. Students differ in learning styles. A combination of teaching approaches allows these differences to be manifested with a view toward reinforced learning through the student’s preferred style and improvement in the use of non-preferred styles. In working with young students, hands-on activities predominate. I enjoy both interacting with students about their experiences and sharing my experiences that relate to the topics at hand. For students at any age, my approach is to challenge them to work through problems or activities after being given foundational and/or relational concepts.
