While helping them learn it is important to let then have fun, challenge them just enough for them to make consistent progress and encourage them to join ensembles or even start a band on their own.
I've been a musician for 30 years, recording, performing, touring, producing and composing. The City Pages chose me as it's 'Jazz Musician of The Year' in 2004 and I have been awarded McKnight and Jerome fellowships. I did not start playing the saxophone (my main instrument) until my 21st birthday. I then practiced a lot and have a very clear idea of how to learn and teach.
